Abandoned

The old ramshackle house was rumoured to be haunted. Severely neglected for many years, it now sat grim and silent. The last family seemed to have moved out unnoticed.

When the strange, mournful sounds began emanating from the dilapidated house, authorities were called in to investigate.

There in a corner of a dark, squalid room was an emaciated  old dog, and her litter of puppies.

  1. My heart went out to this, anything to do with animals being neglected...abandoned... a sad but beautiful piece.

    1. Thank you, Rambly T. I am the same. I have a very soft spot for animals, who are helpless.

    1. This was fiction, sadly inspired by reality.

  3. I know this is fiction but too often this scene plays real somewhere and the poor abandoned animals suffer terrible neglect and pain.

Someone will be held accountable for their suffering.

The introduction of this story brings the reader in. Well done.
    Have a great weekend.
    Hugs,

  4. How very horrible., I don't understand people that can do that to a defenseless animal. It would also make a good lead-in to a book??? Just thinking!

  5. Horrible. I never will understand humans that do that to an animal, Then my thoughts went over to "that would be a good lead-in to a book!" Just thinking here.

  10. Nice. Love the surprise of it not being haunted.

Animal neglect and abuse is a big issue. I always try to remember though, we also have humans treated the same way. The world is cruel, but we can make it better one person at a time. A little kindness goes a long way.

    God Bless

  12. We both know that this happens ... and has happened in our own neighborhood. My feelings are torn between pain and anger. When I see things like this it brings out a side of me that I don't really like. I just hope that if any of us see it, we will take the time to help the animals and find them a home. As always your writing is stirring ... I am still waiting for you to write another book. It is there inside of you ... take the time, we are waiting.

    1. This is a composite of many stories I have heard and seen. It happens far too often.
I am working on a book, because there are stories inside me that need to be told.

  16. Really enjoyed reading this. I felt that even though the previous family moved out, this poor dog made the creaky old house a home for herself and used it for shelter. Great ending, glad that she was found.

  17. A lovely write! But then you had my attention with the title and the photo, both subjects favorites of mine. Even without the thought of being haunted which most of them often are, or thought to be- but there is a magic one can be lost in.

  21. A sad token regarding all the stray dogs and cats roaming our country. Each one merely trying to find food and shelter for themselves as well as for their "unwanted" or needed family.

  22. I hope they found a home for them so they aren't abandoned anymore. All I can think is while it wasn't an ideal hiding spot, at least she had shelter.
