The Duplex

The duplex apartment building was old, dark and full of unusual creaks and sounds.

While our mother worked, the woman next door often came over to babysit us. She told many stories to our eager young ears, keeping us entertained and herself as well.

One night we waited for the woman's arrival, as we quietly sat in our apartment. Finally we heard the stairs creaking, and then shuffling, slow footsteps coming down the long hallway.

As we tentatively answered the deliberate knocking on the door, the lights dimmed and no one was there.

  6. It is curious that children have that inherent knowledge of another world. Somehow they understand safety is being with someone they trust. A really great story.
