Ice Dogs

By Terry Lynn Johnson

Set in the rugged Alaskan wilderness, this is a novel of survival in harsh conditions, but also of a girl and her dogs. Independent and strong, fourteen year old Victoria is a “musher”. Fiercely competitive, she is dedicated to her dogs and to “mushing”.

Victoria often takes her dogs out on mushing (dog sledding) trips, to practice for races. During one trip, she meets Chris, a boy who has been injured in a snow mobile accident. When she becomes lost, she must put all of her skills to the test, as she is faced with the ultimate race of survival. She must get Chris help, as well as save herself and her dogs.

The book is suspenseful, fast paced, and interesting. Author Terry Lynn Johnson is a “musher”, and shares her world of dog sledding very well. This excellent book is perfect for grades 4-8, though it held my attention, too. I recommend it to anyone who loves dog sledding and the dogs who do it.

Visit Terry at to meet her sled dogs and learn more about mushing.
