One Match

This week, the Coffee Chat question posed by Rory Bore of Time Out for Mom is: "You are in a cabin and it is pitch black. You have one match on you. Which do you light first, the newspaper, the lamp, the candle or the fire?"

Okay. I never act hastily, so I pondered this for a while. I kept thinking, "Why am I here?!" I thought about all of the scenarios for each item mentioned. However, I knew the reality was that I have to light the match first to light any of the others. But wait, there is more.

As I said, I never act hastily. I would not light the match until I absolutely had to, because it is the only one I have! I have no idea why I am here or how I got here, and I may need this one match later. It is possible that I can get through to morning and still hang onto my match. It will be daylight then, and maybe I will be able to find more matches! Or perhaps I can get out of this cabin, since it doesn't seem to have much to offer.

Just sayin'.

  1. i'd light the candle, use it to light the lantern, then light the newspaper and start the fire.

    1. These kind of brain teasers just pull you in, don't they? They certainly do me!

  2. After thinking about this for a minute, I think I'd light the newspaper first, get the fire going and there will be light, then light the candle, then the lantern. I'd be afraid if I lit the candle first, the flame would go out before I could accomplish the rest of the items, leaving me with no options left.

    1. That would be my fear: no options left. I just wanted out. Ha!

  3. You really gave that a lot of thought. I guess I just fly by the seat of my pants. I immediately thought that I didn't want to be in the dark in an unknown place and lit the lamp. Hugs, Janet

  4. Ha - good sound reasoning my friend. My hubby - being Left Brain of course, thought on it for a full 15 minutes. but missed that he'd have to light the match first. LOL
Personally I would light the match and then everything else - just to be safe!
And the idea of a wood fire in a rustic cabin is tres romantic, right? :)

    1. My mind went to horror movie. I assumed I was alone. If Bill were there, he would have everything lit!

  5. Haha I love your replies about the horror movie. But if that was true you wouldn't want to be in the dark all night, would you? I'd want to see if Freddy Kreuger was sneaking in a window. I'd light the lamp, then the newspaper and use it to light the candle and throw the burning newspaper in the fire. Voila! Lol

    1. No. If there was light, the creeps would find me. There are just too many creepy possibilities. I just want to know why I am there alone with one match!

  6. I was looking through the comments to see the replies, or if I was the 1st to say it, (but I wasn't) You can't light anything until you light the match! :)

    1. You got it. I did note that in my post, which is why I didn't want to light it unless I had to, for fear of wasting it! Thanks, Ken. Happy to see you here!

  7. The match comes first, of course, but you are right about needing to be careful with it

    1. Exactly. I would only light it if I had to.

  8. I'm not afraid of the dark so I would just go to sleep and wait for the morning light unless I was cold then I would try to get a fire going providing there was something to burn to create heat. In that case I would light the match first of course. the newspaper and then the wood.
What time of year? My basic needs are food and water shelter and warmth and sleep.

    1. I am not afraid of the dark, either. I would be a bit creeped out alone in an unfamiliar dark cabin, though. I would try to sleep and save my match until I had to use it.

  9. Can't light anything until you light the match. But after that my choice would be the fire. With the fire going you can light anything else you want to. Keep it going at least enough to have some cinders and you are set.

    1. What to light first wasn't the problem for me. It had to be the match. It was more a case of to light or not, and why I was there.
