A Maggie Moment

~Maggie P.~

Maggie is the quintessential “big sister”. She was just three years old when we took in the newborn kittens. Initially, I had been a bit concerned how she would react. Rejected by her catmom, Maggie had been a bottle fed orphan. She went on to become a CFA show cat, as a champion Maine Coon polydactyl. Her life had been very different before we adopted her at age one.

I need not have worried, though. Her sweet, loving, and accepting nature took to the babies immediately. She was curious and fascinated. When I fed and cared for them, she became a fixture next to their crate. She sat up with me night after night, as I filled their humidifier and helped them breathe.

When the kittens were old enough to be weaned, Maggie was left with the dynamic duo. She took it upon herself to teach them the basics of cat behavior and etiquette. Independent Grizelda was a quick study, while Chloe Jo took a lot more work (even still). This actually cemented the closeness that Maggie and Chloe Jo maintain today. While it gives Maggie a pirpose, it seems to gives Chloe Jo a mission!

Since Chloe Jo has been so sick lately, Maggie has made it a point to be even more accessible to Chloe Jo for comfort and warmth. She watches and follows Chloe Jo, without invading her space. She knows not to upset Chloe Jo. However, she is sure to be available for care and face washing She makes extra room for sunbathing and at naptime, too. She is leaving all of the entertainment to Grizelda.

We are so proud of Maggie for her sweet, loving, and patient ways. She has always been unselfish to the point of indulgent. She even accepted Stella, the Sheltie, without question. We know it hasn’t always been easy to be the "big sister", but she took it upon herself to be the best one possible. We love her all the more, as do Grizelda and Chloe Jo, and Stella, too.

  1. Maggie is a very special caring cat and it so nice that she can support the other cats.

One thing I noticed in barn cat behaviour is when ever I have a very sick calf that is dying , some of them would go sleep right next to it. They seem to know before me that the calf will die. I had a three day old heifer calf that the cats would get in her pen and laid beside her. It looked fine to me but they knew something wasn't right. The next morning I found her stretched dead. What a horrific feeling. An autopsy revealed a malformed stomach that leaked in the cavity of the body.

I've noticed that it had happened twice for different reason that a calf was dying. How the cats knows, I'll never know.

    Keeping Chloe in my prayers...
    Hugs,
    JB

    1. I believe this. The book "Making Rounds with Oscar", by Dr. Dosa illustrates this best. I have it on my book review page, and highly recommend it.

  2. Hi McGuffy,
Animals have the pack mentality and support each other.
Now that Shaggy is elderly, Chaka has taken over some of the guarding of the house. Black Kitty follows Shaggy when he goes for a walk to ensure he is okay. The other cats are keeping an eye on Shaggy as well.

It is amazing how sensitive they are to changes in the health of a member of their pack. I see that your kids are doing the same.

    Very beautiful!

    Peace :)

    1. Indeed, Chandra. Critters understand what is important, not getting caught up in things that do not matter in the long run. They love unconditionally, accepting fully.

  8. That makes our mommy so sad for us as none of us are very nurturing. Two of our angel brofurs, Skooter and Madson, were super nurturing, but we are pretty much just out for ourselves. You have a unique and wonderful household. Mommy loves that you are sharing more about the kitties with all of us. Continuing to send purrs and prayers to Chloe Jo and love to all. Thanks for joining and purrmoting our blog hop. Maggie is stunning and her selfie is purrfect. Drop by tomorrow and join our version of the Mice Bucket Challenge and Comment-a-thon.
