Left Behind

From dawn to dusk, Amelia chases the sun and walks in the shadows. The walls of the old cottage both contain and isolate her. Routine only serves to give time a purpose these days.

Having all moved on to greener pastures, there is no one left to check on her. Now it is just Amelia and the clock, and the cats she feeds every day.

Word Prompt: Isolated

  1. What a nice little secluded place for Amelia to be with her pets. It does sounds like a lonely life though. I wonder if she's happy just the same by keeping busy.
Surely someone will come to visit even if it's only the birds and the wild animals.
    Hugs.

    1. What a lovely comment. I like to think that Amelia is good where she is. Loneliness and isolation are often too close to distinguish the difference between. However, nature and critters are always good companions. Sometimes we are blessed in small ways. Hugs.

  2. Annie, I'd guess Amelia might be very happy there. Some like seclusion with only the animals to keep them company. Life could be worse!

    1. Linda, sometimes we choose isolation. Sometimes life and circumstance chooses it for us. For those who do not, I am not sure they would agree that life could be worse.

  3. I generally skip the poetry stuff (sorry...but you know how I am), but the image of that little cabin drew me in and I was glad to have taken the time to read it. Very sweet and to some the story might sound sad, but it also sounds very peaceful and nice.

    1. I am glad you took the time to read my flash fiction, too. It can seem like poetry, which I take as a compliment.
Each of us has a different journey in life. It is subjective, based on what we know from our experiences.
It is always interesting to me how my poetry and stories are received and interpreted. I hope to move people to think and feel. Thanks for commenting!

  5. I think Amelia's life with the cats sounds rather nice, but I suppose the question that needs to be asked is whether her isolation is chosen, or if it was imposed upon her.

    1. Exactly. Isolation affects us different ways, depending upon reasons and experiences.

  6. Ah yes, and what lurks around the corner, or the turn of the clock?! You have me ready for more. (Very cute cottage too)

  7. And since no one checks on her, does she ever go to town to go visiting?

    1. Good question, Mimi. I guess it depends on whether she has anyone there, or any way to get there.

  9. You do this so well, Annie. Seriously. So short (5 sentences), but a whole (well, not complete) story and a whole lot left to follow, or for imagination.

  13. At first when I read the title I was thinking the sweet little cottage had been left behind... forgotten. Amelia has a sweet place there and cats make wonderful companions!
