Lena's Plate

Every day, without fail, Lena came through the line of the soup kitchen. When asked if she wanted each item, she always shrugged, saying, “Smidgen.” Then, she tucked her plate carefully into a bag and headed out the door.

As she rounded the corner into the back alley, a quivering little dog sat waiting. Approaching, Lena gently put down the plate of food saying, “Here, Smidgen.”
